What to Expect at Your First Nutrition Counseling Visit
By Nicole Randazzo, MA, RDN, CDCES
A guide to the Bettr Full approach — so you know exactly what your care will look and feel like.
Many people reach out with the same question:
“What will my first nutrition Visit be like?”
Whether you’re managing pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes, navigating GLP-1 medications, working toward natural weight loss, or building confidence after a bariatric surgery, knowing what to expect can make starting nutrition counseling feel much easier.
This guide walks you through the Bettr Full process — from your intake form to what we cover in your first session, plus how insurance coverage works.
Before Your First Visit: Intake + Optional Discovery Call
Before your first nutrition counseling session, there are a few simple steps to help ensure our time together is focused, personalized, and productive.
Before we meet, you can expect to:
- Schedule an optional 15-minute discovery call to determine if we’re a good fit and answer any initial questions
- Have your insurance benefits verified by Bettr Full to confirm coverage for nutrition counseling
- Please allow up to 2 business days for this process to be completed
- Complete a secure intake form so I can review your health and nutrition history in advance
- Clarify your personal health goals, allowing us to prioritize what matters most to you from the very first session
If you’d like to learn more about your coverage in advance, you’re also welcome to call the number on the back of your insurance card using the script provided below.

Taking care of these steps ahead of time helps your initial visit feel smooth, supportive, and stress-free — with clear expectations and no surprises.
My Nutrition Philosophy: Supportive, Sustainable, Real Life
Nutrition should support your life — not control it.
At Bettr Full, I believe food is more than macros or “shoulds.” It’s emotional, cultural, social, and deeply nourishing. My role is to help you feel good in your body, improve your health, and build habits that support your real life not an unrealistic standard.
My approach centers on:
✨ Balance over restriction
✨ Building a healthier relationship with food
✨ Respecting the emotional side of eating
✨ Using food as a supportive pathway toward feeling better
✨ Habits you can maintain in your actual routine
This is how we create health that lasts — with or without medication.
What Happens in Your Initial Nutrition Visit
During your first session, we’ll take a deeper look at the factors that influence your health, habits, and relationship with food.
Together we’ll explore:
- Your eating patterns and daily routines
- Any digestive symptoms or food-related concerns
- Sleep and stress, and how they impact appetite, energy, and blood sugar
- Your physical activity and movement habits
- Your relationship with food, including past experiences with dieting
- Your weight and diet history, viewed through a supportive, non-judgmental lens
This part is essential. It helps me understand your needs, your story, and where to focus first so we can create meaningful progress.
After that, we’ll begin shaping a nutrition plan tailored to your goals. This may include:
- macronutrient targets
- balanced meal templates
- strategies for blood-sugar stability
- guidance for managing GLP-1 side effects
- post-bariatric nutrition support
- personalized recommendations based on labs or medical history
You’ll leave with 1–2 clear, realistic steps to start with, not a long list of rules. At follow-up visits, we’ll check in on how things are going and keep building from there.

Insurance Coverage: Nutrition Counseling Is Often $0 for You
Because Bettr Full is an insurance-based practice, we are in-network with:
- Aetna
- Blue Cross Blue Shield
- UnitedHealthcare
- Cigna
- EmblemHealth

Before your first visit, we verify your benefits using the exact CPT codes for Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT). You’ll receive a breakdown of:
- Whether Your Deductible Applies
- How Many Visits Your Plan Covers
- Whether You Have A Copay (most clients do not have a copay)
- Whether A Referral Is Required (Usually Not)
Most clients receive at least 3 fully covered visits each year — and many qualify for More sessions depending on their medical history.
If we are not in-network with your insurance or not credentialed in your state, you can still work with me through:
- HSA/FSA cards, or
- a Superbill (an itemized receipt you submit for potential reimbursement)
If paying out of pocket, I also offer a 4-visit package that saves you money compared with paying per session.
No surprises. No hidden fees. Just transparent, accessible nutrition care.
